| On Tuesday 24 June
2008 we celebrate, not only the birth of St John the Baptist, our
Patron Saint, but also the 50th anniversary of the re-consecration in
1958 of our church following the disastrous fire of 1955.
Below we set out our Patronal Festival Events, commencing with a Service on Tuesday 24 June and culminating with our Summer Fete on Saturday 5 July. Tuesday 24 June 7.30pmPatronal Festival Service The service begins with a procession from the Scouts' Den (in the churchyard just off the local "Narrow Way" shopping street) and will be led by the Bishop of Stepney, the Rt Revd Stephen Oliver. Also taking part will be the Girls Choir of Ely Cathedral and Hackney's Pantonic Steel Band. Thursday 26 June 5pm Visit to Hackney Free and Parochial Secondary School, founded in 1520 We are invited to the School, in Paragon Road, Hackney, to look at the plans for the complete rebuild of the school. During the evening we will be able to pray for the school and listen to its newly formed School Gospel Choir. Saturday 28 June 2pm Monumental Brass Society Discover our 16th-century heritage in the heart of Hackney. Sunday 29 June 7.30pm The House that Nugent Built Following Evensong at 6.30pm, Elaine Harwood will present an illustrated talk on the work of N F Cachemaille-Day, architect of the 1958 interior of St John-at-Hackney Church. Tuesday 1 July 7.30pm The Fire Remembered An opportunity to learn more from eyewitness accounts about the fire which devastated St John-at-Hackney Church in 1955. Wednesday 2 July 7.30pm Organ Recital Richard Baker, Director of Music at St John-at-Hackney will be playing pieces by Gigout, J S Bach and Mendelssohn. Thursday 3 July 7.30pm A Question of Healing A special service during which you can talk and pray in confidence for any issues or pains that need healing or reconciliation. Saturday 5 July 11am to 4pm Summer Fete in the church grounds All the fun of the fair plus at 12 noon the Archdeacon of Hackney, The Venerable Lyle Dennen will rededicate the newly restored churchyard.
