Mini-ring at church fete 2008

<< St John's Belltower
St John-at-Hackney is a major centre for ringing in east London.

There are ten bells - eight date from 1957, following the fire in 1955. The tenor, or largest bell, weighs a little over 16cwt. In 2004, two smaller bells were added, which was a defining moment for ringing in east London.

This is very much an active tower, ringing for Sunday and other services, national celebrations and commemorations. The Monday practice night (7.30 - 9pm) is particularly well attended, supported by ringers from both the local band and neighbouring towers. A broad range of ringers of all standards take part, from novice to peal ringer. The tower is affiliated to the Middlesex County Association & London Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and provides training opportunities for ringers throughout the Diocese.

New ringers are always welcome, whether they want to learn for the first time, are returning to ringing after a break or are already experienced and looking to join a friendly local band which offers a wide range of ringing.

The Tower Captain, Stephen Jakeman, will be happy to deal with any enquiries:

BIRTHDAY PARTY for the BELLS
******************************
On Sunday 19 October
with Choral Evensong at 2.30pm
we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of
the original eight bells
(they were augmented to ten in 2004)

We hope as many as possible of the bell ringers who have
passed through our door since 1958 will join us.
Evensong will be followed by a
Grand Ringers Tea
and of course there will be plenty of ringing!
If you have reason to give thanks for the bells
over these 50 years please do come and help us
make this celebration go with a bang!
