THE FRIENDS of St JOHN'S

The Friends of St John's was first set up in1955, following a disastrous fire in the church. It served its purpose at that time in supporting the restoration of the building.

The Friends Group was revived during 1997 when the church celebrated the bicentenary of its consecration in 1797. Whether this is your first knowledge of our church, a place of old memories, or your regular place of worship, please consider becoming a Friend today.

The church is a Grade II* listed building. After three applications to English Heritage for financial help to enable us to repair the church roof, porches, gutters and drainpipes, we were offered a grant of £85,400 in 2002 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, but the total cost of the work was estimated at £189,055. We managed to raise the balance of £103,655 and the work was completed in the spring of 2005.

As with all major buildings, the maintenance work is never ending, and we do have a vision for the future.

All Friends' contributions go into a fund restricted to the church fabric.

Membership of the Friends of St John's is by suggested minimum donation of £10 per year for UK residents, or £15 per year for overseas Friends. You will receive four newsletters annually and be helping to maintain this wonderful church as a landmark in Hackney for another 200 years.
