What St John's did for me
Was release me from captivity
It opened my heart and my mind
To activity of a different kind
Accepted me without question
To follow the road of destiny.
Extract from a poem written
by
a user of the Hackney 180° project
housed in St
John-at-Hackney Church
St John-at-Hackney is an accessible, ethnically
and socially
diverse community.
- We aim to serve the Kingdom of God in the
Spirit of Jesus.
- We seek to be a church for all people and
encourage an environment
where young or disadvantaged people, and wider civic and multi-faith
groups
can feel welcome.
- We are open to all the people of our
parish
and acknowledge
our central position within the urban fabric of this densely populated
borough.
- We aim to provide a safe, welcoming and
non-judgemental environment
where people can find peace and the space to grow spiritually. A place
where, through God's love, they can release their true potential as
human
beings.
Our church building both constrains these
endeavours and
offers potential opportunities. Currently, fiscal effort is focussed on
church fabric - human work - rather than church activity - God's
work. The proposed major redevelopment of the church building is an
attempt to redress this imbalance.
Within this context, our Mission Action Plan
(MAP) outlines
current feasible activity and funding, with a hint of our aspirations
for
future areas of activity. As such, it forms our practical response to
the
London Challenge issued by our diocese.
